The mission of Groundwork Hudson Valley is to restore the environmental conditions of economically disadvantaged communities in the Hudson Valley to make them more equitable, sustainable, healthy, beautiful, and economically viable.  We are dedicated to empowering local residents and bringing together business, government, and community groups to achieve sustainable change.

The DOI/VISTA project site Groundwork Hudson Valley is sponsored by the National Park Service (NPS) whose mission is to preserve unimpaired the natural and cultural resources and values of the national park system for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of this and future generations. The Park Service cooperates with partners to extend the benefits of natural and cultural resource conservation and outdoor recreation throughout this country and the world.

About the Surrounding Community

Groundwork Hudson Valley has two target communities, Yonkers and Newburgh, NY. Both have among the highest levels of socioeconomic distress in New York. Yonkers is the state’s fourth largest city and where most of Groundwork Hudson Valley’s work is centered.  The core urban area has 80,000 residents and is a federally-designated Empowerment Zone, a state-designated Empire Zone, a HUD Community Development Block Grant Zone, and an EPA-designated brownfield neighborhood. The community has more than 6,000 units of public housing over two square miles, and 70% of its residents are Hispanic or African-American. 35% percent live in poverty.

Project Overview

The DOI/VISTA, Pamela Segura, helps Groundwork Hudson Valley provide ways to bring about economic empowerment throughout Yonkers. This includes assisting managers at the farmers’ market and eventually contributing to the success of two major projects: the citizen farmers’ program and the Yonkers Greenway Project. Including a potential rail trail that stretches from the Getty Square Station in the downtown area of Yonkers to Van Cortlandt Park in the northwest section of the Bronx, the Greenway Project promises to revitalize the Lowerre neighborhood of Yonkers by: providing residents more opportunity to watch their own neighborhoods, increasing mobility between Yonkers and New York City, and promoting a healthier lifestyle with more space to exercise. Pamela is highly involved in Groundwork Hudson Valley’s youth corps conservation projects supporting various activities including building local trails, restoration, and promoting stewardship in the Saw Mill River parks. She is also spearheading a River Warden project wherein residents of municipal housing units receive a monthly stipend to report illegal dumping in the Saw Mill River. Lastly, she is leading a nature reading and writing group with several Yonkers residents. Throughout these projects, Pamela also provides translations to ensure that members of the Spanish-speaking community in southwest Yonkers can express thoughts, ideas, and concerns in charettes.
