The mission of Cabrillo National Monument (CABR) is to support and fund interpretive, cultural, historical, scientific and educational programs, and activities at Cabrillo National Monument, San Diego's only National Park.
About the Surrounding Community
Cabrillo is an Urban and International Park located in an area of San Diego with a high percentage of minority communities. The site is involved in outreach in the historic Logan neighborhoods of Sherman Heights, Grant Hill, Stockton, Logan Heights and Memorial. This area consists of 81% minority communities and 36% of families live in poverty. Families within these communities lack the resources and education to lead healthy lives and suffer disproportionately from poor nutrition and lack of exercise. As a result, this DOI/VISTA Project addresses this need by engaging families and youth in healthy living initiatives sponsored by the Dusty Socks Club and CABR.
DOI/VISTA Tashia Williams supports CABR by engaging families and youth in healthy living initiatives. The aim of this project is to inspire youth to get outdoors and appreciate the fragile ecosystem that is San Diego County. The healthy initiative not only focuses on physical activities but healthy lifestyle choices; including urban gardening, food nutrition, decreasing carbon footprints, and economic savings.
