Voyageurs National Park Association’s mission is to protect and promote the natural, recreational, and historic resources of Voyageurs National Park.
The purpose of Voyageurs National Park is to preserve, for the inspiration and enjoyment of present and future generations, that outstanding scenery, geological conditions, and water system which constituted a part of that historic route of the Voyageurs who contributed significantly to the opening of the Northwestern United States.
The DOI/VISTA project site Voyageurs National Park is sponsored by the National Park Service (NPS) whose mission is to preserve unimpaired the natural and cultural resources and values of the national park system for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of this and future generations. The Park Service cooperates with partners to extend the benefits of natural and cultural resource conservation and outdoor recreation throughout this country and the world.
About the Surrounding Community
America’s economic future depends on the success of its youth. Approximately 20% of our country's children live in low-income circumstances—one in five. Only 10 percent of youth from low-income families graduate from a four-year college, compared to more than 25% from middle-income families and more than 50% from high-income families. This gap is significant. Voyageurs National Park Association (VNPA) is working to address this opportunity gap for low-income students through extracurricular programs such as the Voyageurs National Park Association Youth Ambassador program.
DOI/VISTA, Adam Rautio, is working with Voyageurs National Park Association (VNPA), a nonprofit partner of Voyageurs National Park, to strengthen its youth and outreach programs. Specifically, Adam is developing strategies that enhance Voyageurs’ base of sustainable funding for the Youth Ambassador program so that the VNPA can provide each participant in the program with additional opportunities for learning and skill-building; grow the program so that it serves more youth and remains sustainable; and establishes tools to clearly evaluate and measure the program’s impact. Additionally, Adam is helping assess the needs of the local communities served by Voyageurs National Park, and assist the VNPA to develop opportunities to expand or add environmental stewardship programs at the park to further benefit low-income youth.
